Your particular fishing techniques and preferences as well as the type and test of your line will influence your choice of fishing rod reel combos. It is very common for most fisherman that vary their fishing techniques to carry several different fishing rod combos that are already set up with specific lures or live bait rigs.
My fishing preferences are spinning rod reel combos and much of my fishing experience comes while using these outfits and my recommendations for rod selection included here will be based on my fishing experiences.
St. Croix Avid Casting Series $ 170.00
It’s a little known sidenote to the theory of relativity that a fishing rod can actually make time move faster. Unless the proper adjustments are made this natural phenomenon can sometimes leave you getting home a little later than you might have predicted. Our Avid™ casting rods seem to be especially prone to this “Law of Nature.” Yes, all 35 models. Each one is built from a light, high-modulus SCIII graphite blank outfitted with a premium cork handle, Fuji® exposed-blank reel seat and Fuji’s remarkable Alconite® Concept Guide System. They are the choice of serious fishermen. Especially fishermen who are usually in serious trouble at home.

For casting and trolling with lures and live bait rigs from ¼ to 5/8 ounce, select a 5 ½ to 6 foot medium power, fast action spinning rod When your looking for fishing rod reel combos this would be an excellent general purpose choice.
St. Croix Avid Pearl Spinning Rods $ 160.00
Introducing the new Avid Pearl series. The most advanced rods ever developed for women who take their tackle as seriously as their fishing. Featuring a gorgeous, fuschia-metallic finish, the high-modulus SCIII graphite blanks incorporate St. Croix’s proprietary IPC technology. Lightweight and sensitive, each rod is a highly specialized, technique- and species-specific fishing tool. Topped off with Alps zirconium guides, Fuji reel seats, split-grip cork handles and slim-profile ferrules, Avid Pearl rods are ready for just about anything – including kicking some gentlemen bass anglers’ butts. What’s not healthy about that?
For casting small jigs and other lures and rigs weighing from 1/16 to 3/8 ounce, select a 5 to 5 ½ foot light power, fast action spinning rod This rod flexes easily on the back cast, so it works well in propelling light lures and baits.
If your specialty is casting and trolling large deep diving crank baits and heavy 1/2 ounce or larger live bait rigs than look for bait casting fishing rod combos that are 5 1/2 to 6 foot in length with medium power and fast action. Because this rod has more backbone than most spinning rods, it is better suited for heavier lures and rigs.
If you are a live bait fisherman you are going to want to look for a more robust fishing rod reel combos. Look for a 6 to 7 foot light power medium action spinning rod. These rods are a better choice for live bait fishing than shorter and stiffer rods because of there casting distance.
If you are going to be targeting a soft biting fish species for example the walleye, then sensitivity needs to be a important consideration in your selection when you shopping for quality fishing rod combos. Notice that most of the recommended rods have a fast action. Slower action rods are not as sensitive. Most serious fisherman prefer graphite or boron rods because they transmit vibrations better then fiberglass rods.
There are other features of the rod’s construction that you need to consider. For instance, for better vibration the rod blank should extend in one piece from the tip all the way through the rod handle and should be constructed using single foot line guides because double foot guides add weight to the rod and restrict the rods action.
Please feel free to use any of our recommendations on selecting rod reel combos we have included on this webpage. Please understand that these are only guidelines that are based on our personal fishing experiences over a 25 year period, but there are always other selections you can make.
